Mate
Mate is produced from the leaves of the Mate bush and can be purchased green as well as roasted. Mate is a naturally caffeinated plant. The leaves of the plant like black and green teas are withered and dried.
South Americans drink Mate from a gourd called a “Cuia”. The Cuia is filled 2/3 with Mate and then filled with cold or luke warm water. The Mate is allowed to steep for a minute and then poured out. Now that the first bitter infusion has been thrown out – hot water is poured into the Cuia and can be enjoyed. To drink Mate from the Cuia a “Bombilla” is used – a long metal straw that strains the leaves as you drink.
Traditionally Mate is enjoyed with friends and the Cuia is passed around to enjoy.
