What is Tea
Tea grows all around the world through countries and regions that vary
greatly from each other geographically. It is difficult to narrow down the
required growing conditions for tea. Temperature, precipitation, soil conditions
and altitude are only some of the components that lead to a tasty, complicated
and healthy beverage.
At present, India produces approximately 870 million kg of tea a year – that is
equivalent to one third of the world’s crop. They are followed in production by
China, Kenya and Ceylon. Generally, the further you travel from the equator the
less likely it is that you will find the tea plant growing.
All teas come from the same plant, camellia sinensis. Teas are then classified
in four major categories – White, Green, Oolong or Black. The colour of tea is
the result of the chemical changes that take place when the leaves are given
time to oxidize before drying.
